Shiberu - Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-10-08
These terms are written in English; translations are provided for convenience. The English version is authoritative.
These terms are the agreement between you and Shiberu for using the Shiberu language-learning service: the app at https://shiberu.app, the mobile app, and the Shiberu browser extension. They are written to be read by a real person.
By creating an account or using Shiberu, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy (available at https://shiberu.app/privacy), which explains how we handle your data. If you do not agree, please do not use Shiberu.
The short version
•
Shiberu is free to use: no subscriptions, no in-app purchases and no ads.
•
The flashcards and decks you create are yours. Publishing a deck lets other learners clone and study it.
•
Be decent in community spaces, and do not cheat the XP or leaderboards.
•
The browser extension works alongside sites like YouTube and Netflix - use it in line with those sites’ own rules. It only reads subtitle text, never the video.
•
AI-generated explanations and translations can be wrong. Double-check anything important.
•
You can delete your account at any time. We may update these terms and will tell you when it matters.
1. Who we are and what you are agreeing to
Shiberu ("we", "us") provides the Shiberu language-learning service. These terms apply to everything we operate under the Shiberu name: the web app, the mobile app, and the browser extension. You can reach us any time at
[email protected]. Shiberu is operated by
Stratford Oakham EOOD ("Stratford Oakham" Ltd.), a company registered in Bulgaria (UIC/EIK 207500501, VAT BG207500501), registered office: ul. Racho Dimchev 1, entr. A, fl. 2, apt. 9, Sredets, 1000 Sofia, Bulgaria.
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age required in your country to use an online service without parental consent) to create an account.
2. The service
Shiberu helps you learn languages with spaced-repetition flashcards, a reader for native texts, and a browser extension that turns subtitles and web text into study material. Shiberu is provided free of charge.
Shiberu is an evolving product: we may add, change, or remove features as the service develops. We work to keep your study data safe through changes, and you can export your decks in Anki format at any time.
3. Your account
Keep your login credentials to yourself and give us accurate account information. You are responsible for what happens under your account. If you believe someone else has accessed it, change your password and contact us.
You can delete your account at any time from the app settings. Deleting your account removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy.
4. Your content
The decks, cards, notes, and other study material you create in Shiberu are yours. You keep ownership of them.
So that Shiberu can work, you give us permission to store, process, and display your content as part of running the service - for example syncing it across your devices, generating audio for your cards, or producing AI study aids you request. We use this permission only to operate and improve Shiberu.
If you publish or share a deck, you are letting other Shiberu users discover it, clone it, and study it. Cloned copies may persist for those learners even if you later unpublish or delete your original.
•
Only publish content you have the right to share. Do not publish material that infringes someone else’s copyright.
•
We may remove shared content that is infringing, harmful, or otherwise breaks these terms.
5. Community rules
Shiberu has community features: shared decks, comments, friends, and leaderboards. Keep them pleasant.
•
No harassment, hate speech, spam, or illegal content.
•
No impersonating other people.
•
Do not manipulate XP, streaks, or leaderboards with automation or fake reviews - it ruins the fun for everyone, and we may reset gamed progress.
6. Acceptable use
Do not abuse the service. In particular, do not:
•
Probe, breach, or work around security or access controls.
•
Overload the service with automated traffic, scrape it at scale, or resell access to it.
•
Interfere with other people’s use of Shiberu.
•
Use Shiberu to store or distribute malware or unlawful material.
7. The browser extension and third-party sites
The Shiberu browser extension works alongside third-party websites such as YouTube, Netflix, and other video and reading sites. Shiberu is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of those services.
You are responsible for complying with the terms of the sites you use the extension on, and you need your own valid account with any site that requires one. The extension only reads the subtitle text it gets from the site’s own player (it may ask the player for its subtitles, for example by turning a subtitle track on) - it never captures or downloads protected video or audio.
Because those sites change without notice, extension features that depend on them may stop working at any time. We do our best to keep up, but we cannot guarantee compatibility.
8. AI-generated content
Some Shiberu features generate content automatically - word explanations, translations, example sentences, mnemonics, text-to-speech audio, and similar study aids. AI-generated content can be incomplete or wrong.
These aids are provided to support your learning, not as authoritative reference material. Double-check anything that matters, and use the in-app reporting tools when you find content that is incorrect.
9. Our content
The Shiberu software, design, and the content we author ourselves - such as official decks and reading material - belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-transferable license to use them for your own learning within Shiberu.
Please do not copy, redistribute, or republish that content outside the service. Cloning official decks into your own Shiberu library, as the product intends, is of course fine.
10. Copyright complaints
If you believe content shared on Shiberu infringes your copyright, email
[email protected] with the details: what the work is, where the infringing material appears, and how we can contact you. We will review and remove infringing material.
11. Ending your use of Shiberu
You can stop using Shiberu and delete your account whenever you like.
We may suspend or close accounts that seriously or repeatedly break these terms - for example spam, abuse of other users, or attacks on the service. Where reasonable, we will warn you first.
12. Disclaimers and liability
Shiberu is provided "as is". We work hard to keep it reliable and your data safe, but we cannot promise the service will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free, and we recommend using the built-in Anki export to keep your own copies of decks you care about.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Shiberu is not liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of the service. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as Shiberu evolves. When a change meaningfully affects your rights, we will let you know - in the app or by email - before it takes effect. Continuing to use Shiberu after a change means you accept the updated terms. Earlier versions are available on request.
14. General
These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and Shiberu about the service. If part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a part of these terms right away, we are not giving up the right to do so later.
